Welwitschia Mirabilis



Welwitschia  is a desert plant. This plant is commonly called as living fossil. 


 It  is named after the Austrian botanist Friedrich Welwitsch who discovered it in 1859. This plant grows in Namib desert of Namibia and Angola. This plant has a prominent Taproot system.

After germination the cotyledons grow into 25-35 mm in length. There appears two permanent leaves which are produced at right angles to the cotyledons.

This is a dioecious plant with separate male and female plants. The fertilization ocuurs through Pollination.

The LifeSpan of this plant varies from approximately 1000 years to 2000 years.
